[10512] All data from R. Tibbetts. Melvan was a soldier in the Civil War. Heenlisted at 17 and participated in 15 major engagements. He servedunder Generals Butler, Ransom, and Banks in the Army of the Gulf . Hewas in the engagements at 15 Mile House, Bagdad, and Miltown. Whileat Pensacola, FL with Admiral Farragut, he participated in the siegeand capture of the Forts of the Mississippi River and New Orleans andthe Battles of LaFourche & Thibodeaux Station. He participated in thecapture of the Texas coast from the Rio Grande to Galveston and inthe battles at Fort Sems, Mustang Island, Fort Esperanza, MatagordaIsland and Decrows point. In the Red River Campaign he marched 950miles in and through Louisiana, participating in battles at SabineCross-Roads, Pleasant Hill, Mansura Plains,Cane River Crossing, andMorganzia Bend. In July, 1864,he was transferred to the Army of thePotomac, under Gen. Sheridan, and was on Sheridan's Ride, and servedseveral month in the Shenendoah Valley. He was mustered out on Jan.1,1865. During the battle of Pleasant Hill in Louisiana he was woundedin the hip, the bullet remaining all of his life thereafter. Hisenlistment was in the 15th Maine Volunteers. After being wounded, heand a comrade, Jasper Fisher, also wounded, refused to stay in thebase hospital, and after much difficulty rejoined their unit, havingto pass through 40 miles of enemy held territory. Melvan was deeplyinvolve in the G.A.R. (Grand Army of the Republic) the veteransorganization for Civil War Vets (Union).
