When Gideon was 7 the family moved to Manchester Township, IN wherehe grew up. He made many flat-boat trips hauling hay to New Orleanswith his father, floating down the Ohio to the Mississippi and on toNew Orleans. 14 years after he married, he took his family on theOregon Trail from Jones County, IA. The trip took 9 arduous months,shortened by his skill in building a flat-boat on which he loaded hisparty and goods until forced to portage by the rapids at the Cascades.The empty boat survived the rapids, and was used beyond the LowerCascades to complete the journey. His ox-team & covered wagon made thetrip safely.
On arriving at Portland village, he chanced upon the abandoned Dobbinshomestead, and claimed it. It was thereafter known as 'The GideonTibbetts donation land claim'. On this land, the first painted woodhouse in East Portland was built and later he built a larger one atthe intersection of Gideon and Mary Streets. Tibbetts Street was namedafter him, and with others he built the first flour mill in E.Portland. When free land ran out, he sub-divided and sold home-sitesin the "Tibbetts Addition". In 1877 he was elected to the OregonLegislature. Of their 6 children, only Harriet survived the parents.
