In 1814, at the age of 20, he WALKED 1000 miles to Cincinnatti, OH (avillage), following Indian trails. He worked there for 7 years in aboatyard, helping to build the first steamboat to run the Ohio andMississippi Rivers, (The Fulton). He was a Mate on the first voyagefrom Cincinnatti to New Orleans. They had to put ashore to cut wood tofire the boiler from time to time. He then WALKED back to
Maine for a visit and WALKED Back to Manchester, IN where he boughtGovernment land (In 1917 this farm was owned by Emery Ross). In1851, he took his family to Fort Madison, IA. He was one of the firstmembers of the Cincinnatti Masonic Lodge and later helped establishthe Manchester, IN Lodge. At his death in 1875, he was the oldestmember in Iowa.
The "Tibbetts Martial Band" enlivend southern Iowa for many years. Itwas composed of 5 of his sons, Washington and Taylor on Snare Drums,Polk & Russell on Bass Drums, and Dallas on Fife. They performed ontheir own "Band Wagon" pulled by 4 dappled grays, and driven by theirbrother-in -law Nathaniel Brockway and always with a huge Stars &Stripes waving. David became a very successful farmer, and at thetime of his death owned 600 acres on the Mississippi near Ft. Madison,IA.
DOES NOT Appear in the 1820 Indiana US Census in Dearborn Countyamong the Maine migrants; instead a John Tibbetts is listed as head ofhousehold. The rest of the data on this person suggests his familywas in the migration. According to Tibbetts researchers, he had abrother named John who died in Maine in 1803. Did David use the nameJohn? Also are land sales in the name of John around 1830, but thiscould be his cousin Jonathan Snow Tibbetts.
