TheSpanish troubles account for the loss of the ancestral possession byHendrick, the details of which are still to be found (Appendix 3) Itis not unlikely that Hendrick was the first Protestant of the family.When the people saw their Lord a protestant in those trying days,they, too were emboldened to openly avow their faith in thepredominantly Catholic society.

The protestant church at Duersen bears witness to this. It was one ofthose small communities which once promised so much for the cause ofProtestantism in the South Netherlands. Many of them were crushed bythe Spanish yoke between 1550 and 1600, but a few of them also inPeelland ( the area where Duersen is located) have survived amidst anentire Catholic population up to the present time.

Hendrick became "drossaert" (head magistrate, somewhat like theEnglish Justice of Peace) of Asperen in Brabant. He died at Asperenin 1567
