Phineas was known as Taylor to his family and Tale to his friends.The most influential person in his life was his mother's father,Phineas Taylor. P.T. was the first of his father's second childrenand one brother and 3 sisters followed. The wedding was held atCharity's uncles' house with only the bride's family in attendance. Hehadn't told his family yet that he was getting married. His motherdid not approve. After his marriage he constructed the "Yellow Store"which carried everything from
Bibles to brandy; he also dabbled in real estate, auctioned books, andchecked his lottery agents and branch offices across the state. Theymoved to New York City in the winter of 1834. He was a
heavy drinker but gave it up in 1848. In the 1850's he ran forgovernor and in 1865 he ran for Connecticut Legislature and wasnominated March 24 as the Republican represenative for
Fairfield.
In 1867 he became the Republican candidate for U.S. Congress but lost.He and his second wife, Nancy, were secretly wed in London just 13weeks and 2 days after Charity's death. They were married againSeptember 16 in New York. On April 5, 1875, P.T. was elected mayor ofBridgeport. He was President of the Republican Town Committee, vicepresident of the local Board of Trade and past president of thePequonnock Bank. He was also founder of East Bridgeport and chiefsponsor and benefactor of the town's beautiful Seaside Park. Hebecame a member of the
Bridgeport's Universalist Church.
