While Dan was in high school the family lived in Colorado Springs.Later he attended the South Dakota School of Mines in Rapid City.While playing football in college, he was badly injured. Relativeswho knew him well regarded him as having good mechanical ability. Hewas considered independent, frugal by nature, and not a good churchorientated person in a family group where religious beliefs wereimportant.
During the years he lived in Pioche, Nevada he worked for thetelephone company and was the projectionist for the movie theater.After his father's death, he bore the expenses of his handicappedbrother, Otto Jr. They shared bachelor quarters. Hubbard Peckham, Anna's brother petitions the probate court for theguardianship of Lucinda, Lauriston, and Ellis, all above the age offourteen. He states they are entitled to one eight part of landsituated in the north part of Dana, MA, containing about 65 acres ofland and two dwellings and mills thereon. It is advised to sell andplace the money on interest for them. On April 3, 1833 HubbardPeckham, Clark Hildreth and Jonathan Simmonds bid themselves to make atrue inventory and look after the rights of Daniel's children. Annaremarried to Samuel Whitney Jr. .
