"Aunt Amanda Hallock, who had long desired to adopt a little girl, asked for Jennie. Mother and Ransom, thinking of Jennie's bestinterests, consented. One morning, as Uncle George and Aunt Amandawere about to leave Grandmother's for Peru, taking Jennie with them;she went down to the front gate and turning, said to Mother, who stoodon the front steps: "Grandma, I've started on my pilgrimage", andMother's heart was pieced by the words and she never got over them.Jennie was then eight years old. How lonely she must have been. Thefarm house stood some distance from the road and quite a distance fromany other home. Large acres stretched out in every direction and - nochildren anywhere near. She was for eight years constantly with hermother and was the idol of her father. In two years, she came back tolive at the old home and was the joy of mother."

"Story of an Old House" - Alice Higby Downs pg. 114

"One more homecoming. One of those who had borne life's vicissitudeskindly, was to pass the portals of the Old Homestead, silent and atrest. Ransom was to come and not return to the turmoil of busy life.He fell asleep in Washington D.C., on Oct 5, 1892, at his boardinghouse. His home had been there for many years. one daughter,Jennette, was with him to comfort his last hours. His son-in-law,Rev. R. O. Post, of Conneaut, Ohio, pays this affectionate tribute:

"A Telegram from Washington D.C. announces the death last evening at10 o'clock, of John R. Morhous, father of Mrs. R. O. Post of thiscity.

Mr. Morhous was born in Willsboro, NY 73 years ago. He grew up in thewoods and fields where the Adirondack Mountain spurs crowd out intoLake Champlain. He was an ardent lover of nature all his life andwith this a lover of good books. Thus, he grew up with a rugged frameand well stored mind. In early manhood, he taught school in themeantime studying law, in the office of Mr. Cheney. The law businessprospered and in a few years, he had a delightful home and the futurewas rosy hued. Then came the sorrow of his life. Emily, his belovedwife was taken from him. With her his life went also. He quit thelaw, gave up his home and never married again. An Uncle,Representative Higby of California, got a position for him inWashington DC where he was since resided. Twenty eight years ago, hewas appointed Superintendent of the Redemption Division of theTreasury and through all the changing administrations, he has held thesame office. This was doubtless due to two facts: first, that he wasa thoroughly trustworthy man; and second, that as a man with figures,he was phenomenal. Literally millions passed through his hands daily, and yet in all these years there has not been discovered the mistakeof a single figure.

He was peculiarly a lovable man, pure, honest as truth and a devotedChristian from early boyhood. He lived a gently, sweet and retiredlife, honored of all, passionately loved by his friends and esteemedby the church of which he was a member. Over no part of his life mustthe curtain of charity be drawn. Peace - he has gone home. He sleepsby the side of Emily and "Little Kate"."
