[8353] All data from Lewis. Lewisanna - The Lewis Letter - Vol VIII- May 1898Pg 168 - "Lieut. James Lewis, born in England, Md. Sarah Lane, thefirst white child born in Scituate, 31 Oct. 1655. Lived in Barnstableand had a family of 10 children. In the Genealogical notes of theBarnstable families, page 14, the following may be found: No man inBarnstable brought up his family better than Lieut. Lewis. All of his10 children were well educated for the times, and all became usefuland respectable men and women. The secret of his success was soontold, he never neglected his business. Every year he added a newfield to his estate and though one of the most generous of fathers, heranked among the wealthy in 1703. Born in 1631, he was 72 years oldwhen he died. His son Lieut. Eben Lewis was equally wealthy. JamesLewis, when a lad, was bound an apprentice to a blacksmith, and inafter life, when he became distinguished, he thought it not derogatoryto his character to blow the bellows or swing a hammer. The Headstoneswhich mark his grave and that of his wife are still to be seen in theold cemetery in Barnstable." Vol VI= Nov 1895- Pg 71- Lewisanna - "Hewas industrious and Frugal. When he could not earn a shilling he wascontent if he earned a penny which he put to good use. By carefulmanagement he accumulated a good estate. In 1655, his houselot,containing 12 acres, was the lot on the west of Taylor's Lane. Itremains very nearly in the same condition that it was in in 1655. Thesuccessive owners have been James Lewis, (2) and his son George Lewis,who bequeathed it to his daughter Mercy Taylor (3) and she to herdaughter Alice (4) wife of the late Isaac Bacon. From him it passedinto the hands of Mr. Williams of Boston, in payment of a debt ofIsaac Bacon, Jr. Williams sold it to the late David Crocker, exq. Hewas Lieutenant of the Military Company of Barnstable many years, andprobably a soldier in Philip's war, for his heirs were proprietors ofGorham town. He was one of the select men in 1679, 89, and 90." Notefrom McLeester - The date of birth and age at death contained in theabove excerpts do not match the dates given by Lewis.
