The results from the 9 Mar 1937 County Examiner(from notes of Ladella Kinney) record his height as 5' 11"; 145 lbs;shoes 10; gloves 9; hat 7 3/4; leg 36; waist 30; chest 36. JohnCharles was named for his two grandfathers, John Dove and CharlesHarvey Kinney and as a consequence he was always called John Charlesby his family and NE relatives. After his father died, when he was 4months old, his mother moved back to live in a small home in Raymond,NE with his paternal grandfather, Charles Harvey Kinney. The family'sonly source of income was the Civil War pension received by hisgrandfather. (John referred to his home in Raymond as a "shack".)After graduating from high school at 16 he attended the University ofNebraska where he was on the football team. (note above his size atthe age of 16). When his grandfather died in 1939, he left collegeand moved to Denver, CO with his mother to find work. She worked as ahousekeeper and he worked odd jobs until he got a job at AT&T for $16per week (He said that he called on AT&T every week until they agreedto give him the job.) After the start of World War II, John enlistedin the Army Signal Corps and was part of a unit made up of AT&Temployees. He served in North Africa and Italy. In Mar 1945, whilehome on leave, he married Mildred Fay Brandt. John continued to workat AT&T for 45 years until his retirement in 1986. As part of hiswork with AT&T he lived and worked in Denver, Laramie, Albuquerque,Los Angeles, Omaha, Basking Ridge, NJ and & Kansas City. John alwaysplayed a good game of tennis (lots of spin & slice) and enjoyedplaying bridge.
