William was left behind under the care of Aunt Leader and did not cometo America until__?
From the book, William de la Montagne Cary, Artist on the MissouriRiver, by Mildred D. Ladner. William came to America in 1826 to NewYork. Listed as a carpenter in Rode's Directory of New York City for1853-1854. His residence is given as 20 W. Thirteenth. Edith CaryFarrell Fenlon, daughter of the artist's sister, Hannah Williams CaryFarrell, provided the only information available on the Cary-Montagnegenealogy in an interview with the Kansas City (MO) Independent,including the following, published on September 10, 1937, on page 12of the newspaper:" An interesting bit of romance is revealed in thebackground of the name William Cary. Legend has it-- although
not altogether confirmed-- that this long succession of William Carysis that line distinguished for having won the hand of the lovely MaryBoleyn (Anne's younger sister) from the clutches of
Henry VIII, after his wife, Catherine of Aragon, saw to it that herlady-in-waiting should wed the man she loved- who was William Cary. Iftrue, it may explain, said a relative, why the proud family of RogerWilliams objected to one of their flock, Elizabeth Williams (later theartist's grandmother) associating with a Cary, whose forbear thus hadbecome contaminated by the attention of England's Blubeard. At anyrate, their objection caused an elopement and this particular WilliamCary (grandfather of the artist) paid the sexton for not ringing thechurch bell after the marriage service, which was the customary way ofannouncing that there had been a wedding." Mrs. Fenlon
gave the senior William Cary's occupation as "architect and builder"and claimed he had learned his profession in England under thetutelage of his uncle Edward Leader.
