[17848] Data from Tuccinardi's file. Note from McLeester - Apparently Josephwas married three times. The names of the children of the first wifeare not recorded here.

Letter from Edith Hammill, daughter of Mary Evaline Young Hammill toher cousin, James, son of James N. Young: "After Uncle Charlie andAunt Anna had 2 children, Lizzie and Carrie, the doctor told UncleCharlie that Aunt Anna must have a change of scene. She had had atleast one mental breakdown. So they moved from Medina County (?- putthere by author) Ohio to Parma, Mich., the whole tribe about. Onemarried daughter, stayed in Ohio. She was married to Charles Deyo. Shedied in childbirth. Those who came, Grandfather Nicholas Young, hiswife Ann Buck Young, his son John, wife and daughter Mabel (afterwardsMrs. Chas. Hemenway) and unmarried children, Eva (Mary Evaline),Martha and James. Uncle Charlie bought a farm about three miles westof Parma. Uncle John bought one about three miles east of there andGrandfather Nicholas bought one on
a road running south from where Uncle John lived. But for a while theylived in Parma. My mother, who was within one term of graduating fromOberlin College taught school. I do not know what James or Martha (askilled pianist) did. Your mother after her graduation from YpislanteNormal Schools came to Parma to teach. There she met your father. MaryEvaline was born in January. Aunt Anna told me that the first placeshe went after Mary was born was to Jackson to see my mother and meafter I was born in April. She probably rode in a lumber wagon withmaybe a
spring seat. She said she looked at her big plump baby and at thelittle scrawny me and wondered if my mother would ???(can't read it.JT) Your mother told me that when your sister was a tiny baby shelooked at her and her short upper lip made her think of my mother soshe named her Evelyn. She also said, " I thought it would pleaseJames." Enough of this. I think you know that in the family storiesthere is this one. George Washington went by their home one day. There was a young man with him that they thought was Lafayette butthey could never be sure. You probably know more of the Cary, Hayesside of the family than I do, especially if Aunt Ella wrote a familyhistory. (No one knows of the history. JT) I think Cousin Joe thoughtthe original spelling was Cary the English spelling. I could notunderstand why the e was inserted. This that follows should bechecked. Your Grandmother Hayes was born in Poughkeepsie(incorrect-she was born in England. JT). There were one other girl inthe family and several boys. Your grandmother said she wanted a good
education but her father thought if a girl could read, write and keepher household accounts, they needed no more. Her brothers had a goodeducation. Uncle Joe taught Latin and Greek in the
University of Ill. He was married 3 times. After the death of hisfirst wife he married a lovely society girl and took her to Europe ontheir honeymoon. She was expecting her first child before theyreturned. She came home to a houseful of children who resented astep-mother. Lizzie the teen aged girl was especially resentful. I donot know who the boys were excepting Joe and G???( I can't read it.JT) The second wife children were Katherine and Alice. Katherine died,Alice married. I do not know her married name. The third wife wasAnnie Dillon. You may remember she came to the Columbian Expositionwith Alice and Kit (?JT- maybe Kate?JT) and stayed at your house about2 weeks. In the Chapel cemetery about 3 miles west of Parma, in a longline of Young graves there is your baby brother Willie and sisterEloise, Uncle Charlie and Aunt Anna Young, their daughter
Dr. Caroline Young High, a place for her daughter Elfrida - a passageway. Then a Ruth Thompson ( I think she was either a ???? (I can'tread it.JT) or the wife of a nephew as one of the grandfather's manysisters married a Thompson. She was in her early twenties. Then AuntMartha Young, Eva (Young Hammill), my mother, Uncle John's small son,Mr. and Mrs. Dyer (Aunt Lizzie Young's father and mother), Uncle John,Aunt Lizzie, Grandfather Nicholas Young, his first wife Ann D. Buckand second wife Mary Moore Young. I think that is all. All the aboveis not very consistent but hope you can make something out of some ofit............."

[17854] Data from Tuccinardi's file.

From a book about his travels west with William Henry Schieffelin andEmlin N. Lawrence published in 1895 (Aunt Evelyn bought it in Tulsa,Ok. at the Gilcrease Gallery, author Mildred D. Ladner).

He was one of the last artists to see the Indians and wild life of thenorthern plains before the red man and wild life were swept aside bythe rush of westward expansion. He produced 213 paintings in color andblack and white. In his early career, most printed illustrations werestill produced by
hand engraved plates. So William de la Montaigne Cary was first anengraver and later an artist.

In the 1890's, he turned from illustration to making oil paintings onspeculation, through the
route of exhibitions, sales galleries and art patrons. The great bulkof his paintings remained with his heirs after his death.

Thomas Gilcrease was the first purchaser in the early 1940's.Eventually, he purchased 65 canvasses, and the bulk of Cary's work isnow in the archives of the Thos. Gilcrease Institute of
American History and Art in Tulsa, Ok.

In 1972, Robert C. Cary, great grandson of Wm. de la M. C. donatedverbal accounts, written or dictated, and other documents andpaintings to the Gilcrease collection. The book is called: William dela Montagne Cary, Artist on the Missouri River, by Mildred D. Ladner.

Info on his paintings and....An established isllustrator for Harper'sand Leslie's when he was 20, Cary with 2 other youths left New YorkCity in 1860 to start a storybook trip west with no particulardestination in mind. They took the river boat Spread Eagle from St.Louis im May 1861, transferring to the Chippewa Fort Union in mid-Juneto see the upper Missouri. On the way to Fort Benton the boat caughtfire and the entire party returned on a handmade flat-boat. The youngNew Yorkers remained at Fort Union for 6 weeks, exploring theneighboring Indians. In August they joined a wagon train for FortBenton that was captured by Crow Indians, then freed because of thepresence of an official of the fur company. From Benton in Septemberthe 3 youths started west again with only a guide and a cook, until bychance after 300 miles on their own, they met with a railway surveyteam that took them toward Portland, Oregon. Cary left for home viaSan Francisco and Isthmus, arriving at the outbreak of the Civil Warand loaded with sketches of the forts along the upper Missouri justbefore the forts were abandoned. Cary then spent the rest of his lifepainting the West from his sketches and his memory, beginning about1866 and continuing for at least 30 years. His illustrations appearedin Leslie's Weekly, Harper's Weekly, Scribner's, etc. He alsoillustrated the
account of his 1860 trip written in 1895 by one of his companions. Hemade at least one other trip west, in the summer of 1874 when he wasinvited to accompany the U.S. Government's survey of the NorthernBoundary.

Unfortunately there are parts I (Judy T.) cannot read - I will pickbits and pieces of info- "When a school boy he entertained his sistersby drawing animals on paper and cutting them out and
pasting them on the window. Sometimes it would be a stag hunt or afoxchase or a herd of cows until he ???. He illustrated many schoolbooks used at that time in the City of New York. Mr. Cary was also asculptor of considerable talent and assisted in carving some of thestone birds and animals at the side of the staircase in Central Park,NYC. known as the Mall. He also produced a number of bronzes depictingIndian life on the western plains. With all his versatility andtalent the
artist preferred to work in oils and he made a special study of theAmerican Indian and traveled and lived among them and depicted theirlives, habits and mode of living all from actual sketches made in theWest and before the cowboy days and when the West was wild and therewere no fences or railroads were unknown west of the Missouri River. Most of the scenes depicted in the artists paintings were made betweenthe years 1861 and 1875 and he visited the old military posts few ofwhich existed in the North West in 1861 and those that were famous inthe Indian Wars a few years later had not yet been established.
