Data from Laudeman. Valentine Theodore Schaff, O.F.M. was the 113thSuccessor of St. Francis as Minister General of the Order of FriarsMinor. He was the first American born minister General. He attendedSt. Joseph grade school, Cincinnatti, OH and St. Francis Prep HighSchool, Cincinnatti, OH. He made his Novitate Aug. 15, 1901. He wasordained July 29, 1909. He graduated J.D. (Canon Law) summa cum laude,from Catholic University of America, Washington, DC. He wasLector-clericate at Oldenburg, IN for 2 years. In 1923 he was Assoc.Prof. Canon Law, Catholic University. In 1933 he was Dean of CanonLaw. He was on the faculty, Catholic University. In 1945 he becameMinister General of the Order of St. Francis, being appointed by PopePius XII.
Fr. Valentine was buried from St. Anthony's Church, Rome; his funeralmass was celebrated there and he was interred under the altar of St.Bonaventure in the Franciscan Church of Ara Coeli, Rome. The memorialissue of "Far Away Missions," the magazine of the FransicianMissionaries of Mary dated Feb. 1947 is among the records of AnnabelleLaudeman as of 1996. This issue gives a complete history of Fr.Valentine's service. A certified copy of Fr. Valentine's deathcertificate is in the possession of Annabelle Laudeman Feb 20, 1996.

He was the first American priest to become a Brown Pope, the112th successor of St.Francis. He was dean of the Canon Law School,Catholic University, Wash DC., 1933-37. Memorial Services were alsoheld on 2 Jan 1947 in Rome at the ancient Santa Sabina church.Cincinnati Enquirer article on 12 Aug 1946 reported on Fr. Valentine'svisit and mentioned his four sisters; Mrs. Harry Noble, 2308 ShadwellStreet; Mrs. Dorothy Schmidt; Mrs. Agnes Berning; and Miss RoseSchaaf; all four living in Greater Cincinnati.
