[535] Lucinda was a student of piano at a music conservatory. She showedconsiderable aptitude for music and had a life long love of music. Seth was a typical hard shelled Yankee, very saving and shrewd as abusiness man. While he lived in North Dana he is reported to havedone a very good business buying up braided straw hats, which at thattime every housewife made, and selling them to a finishing plant inBarre, MA. He moved to Athol in mid life and died there.
The obituary of his death taken from the Athol Transcript of Tuesday,Nov 13, which includes that of Massena Amsden's death as well is inthis account.
Athol has lost two old well known and highly respected citizens in thedeath Sunday night from catarrhal consumption of Seth S. Amsden, andearly yesterday of Massena Amsden from a paralytic shock received daysbefore. The deceased were cousins. Seth was a native of Dana, but hadlived in Athol all of his later life and accumulated a large propertyby dint of close economy and shrewd investments. He has been taxcollector of the town and one of the best Athol ever had. Thoughsomewhat peculiar in his manner, he was a warm hearted man, faithfulin his obligations and he enjoyed the entire respect of all. MassenaAmsden was in the enjoyment of good health until the fatal strokeSunday morning. He lived until two o'clock the next morning. He wasa well known carpenter in prosperous pecuniary circumstances, and aman thoroughly honest and upright in all his dealings. Silas was a Revolutionary War Soldier, and was in receipt of amilitary pension at the time of his death. His estate papers are datedMar. 20, 1797 by the appraisers, so his death occurred prior to thisdate.
