From The Genealogy of Henry Tibbetts of Dover, NewHampshire - He was a well known sea-captain of Salem, removing thencefrom Damariscotta, ME, and on his sailing voyages went to India andother countries. An oil portrait of him, in full regalia, with hisship showing in upper right hand corner, was presented to the EastIndia Marine Society of Salem in 1923 by his descendants, the lateFred W. Tibbets of Gloucester, MA and his sister Miss M. HelenTibbets. An invoice of goods made out to Captain Tibbets, datedCalcutta, 23 January 1802, has been framed and presented to the EastIndia Marine Society. The following note refers to this voyage:"Salem, Ship Hazard, Henry Tibbets, entered from Calcutta, May, 1802."During the Revolutionary War, in his work of standing off armed vesselattacks on the coast, he was considered a genius. A Petition datedBoston, 12 Oct. 1781, signed by William Long in behalf of himself andothers of Salem asking that Henry Tibbets be commissioned as commanderof the schooner Exchange, a privteer, and it was advised in Council 12Oct. 1781 that a commission be issued.
Data from R. Tibbetts. There is some conflict in information in MayTibbetts Jarvis' book about him. On p. 255 of my copy, Family ofNathaniel (5) and Hannah Corson Tibbets, under children, born atRochester, NH, it lists Henry as bapt. 11-17-1754.. On p. 384, Familyof Henry (6) & Elizabeth Abbot Tibbets, his birthplace is shown as pr.Boothbay, and birthdate as 1760.
He was a well known Sea Captain and made many voyages to India. He wasaddressed as Captain by the public, and as 'Sir Tibbets' by relativesand neighbors. At the wishes of her brother, Fred W. Tibbets ofGloucester, MA., Miss Helen M. Tibbets in 1923 presented a portrait ofCaptain Henry to the East India Marine Society of Salem where it hangstoday.
