[3662] All data from Fickett. Francis was the builder of the steamer Savannahin New York 1819. Following are three accounts of her.

The Savannah

The Savannah, of 1819, was a failure by almost every standard. Begunas a sailing ship, she was completed as a steamer. Sent to Europe inthe hope she could be sold for a fancy price, she found no buyer.Restored to a sailing craft rig, she blew ashore off Long Island whenonly three years old and was lost. Yet today, over 180 years later, the Savannah is reckoned one of the world's most illustrious ships. She made the first crossing of the Atlantic under steam.

The judgment of history is no chance development. The Savannah has aright to her niche in immortality. She was an historic vessel of thefirst import, despite the countless historians who belittle hervoyage. The Savannah and her twenty-nine-day crossing to Liverpoolwere high points in a great American maritime epoch.

These were important years in our national development. New stateswere being admitted to the Union in a regular pattern. The "era ofgood feeling" gave a political tranquility to our nation such as ithad not known before, and was not to know again. Our war with Englandhad come to a satisfactory, though perhaps not altogether glorious, conclusion. No longer were our seaman to be impressed or our shipssearched by the British. Well over seventy-five percent of our foreigntrade was born in American ships. Great things, too, were expected ofthe Savannah.

It is true that she was built in 1818 as a sailing craft. But she washand picked for conversion from countless others of her type also onthe ways along the coast. She was selected by Capt. Moses Rogers, aman who would have been famous in his own right had he never commandedthe Savannah. Moses Rogers had been master of the steamer Phoenix onher historic voyage from New York to Delaware in 1809. This was thefirst ocean trip by steam- ship. He later commanded Robert Fulton'sFulton on the Hudson. He was the guiding spirit behind a group ofSavannah shipping men who formed the Savannah Steamship Company.

He commanded that company's one ship --- the Savannah. Moses Rogersbought the Savannah's engine from Stephen Vail, later associated withMorse in the invention of the telegraph. The engine was an inclineddirect-acting proposition, with one cylinder having a fourty-inch boreand a sixty-inch stroke. It was designed to be of ten pounds steampressure, developing ninety horsepower which would drive the ship atsix knots, without sails. The Savannah was launched August 22, 1818,at the Crockett and Fickett's shipyard at Corlear's Hook, New York.Local citizens of the day referred to the Savannah as a "steamcoffin". It was necessary to recruit a crew from New London, home townof Moses Rogers and his brother-in-law, Steven Rogers, who was sailingmaster on the vessel.

The completed Savannah made her trials in New York Bay in March, 1819.Only one contempory picture of the vessel has come down to us. It wasby a Frenchman named Marestier, sent to America to study Americansteamboats. This drawing shows several of the experiments in designcredited to Captain Rogers. One is the swivel smokestack, designed todirect sparks away from the sails. Another is the collapsible paddlewheels. The sketch does not show the iron frame and canvas cover whichtook the place of the even then conventional paddle box.

There can be no doubt of the speculative nature of the Savannahenterprise, it seems in the novel idea which went into herconstruction. It is evident in the way Captain Rogers grasped at everyopportunity that came along to publicize his vessel.

For example, when she reached Savannah on her first voyage it wasdiscovered that President James Monroe was up the coast at Charleston, making a tour of the South. Up anchor and away went the Savannah toCharleston. Captain Rogers hurried ashore at the South Carolina port, met the President, and urged him to continue his southward journey asfar as Savannah on the new Ship. The President declined. It isreported that he feared his popularity in South Carolina would sufferif he left the state in a vessell whose home port was in Georgia.

But Captain Rogers was no to be done out of his publicity stunt. WhenPresident Monroe's party reached the Georgian seaport, there was theSavannah ready and waiting. We can imagine she had all her flagsflying 11 May when she took the President and his suite for an all-dayexcursion to Tybee Light and return.

The Savannah's logbook, bound in heavy canvas probably from the ship'sown sail locker, is in the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC. Itshows that the 320-ton craft left her pier under steam at 09:00 on 22May, now celebrated throughout America as Maritime Day. She anchoredat noon at Tybee Light, remaining there unitl 06:00 24 May. Two hourslater she droppped her pilot and her cross-Atlantic voyage was reallyunderway. For fuel she had seventy-five tons of coal and twenty fivecords of wood. It permitted only between eighty and ninety hours ofsteaming time on the whole voyage.

The vessel's approach to the Old World was marked by two episodesworthy of note. In one she was chased by a British Revenue Cutterwhose master thought she was on fire. In the other she neatlyconfounded efforts of a British Sloop of War to force her to lower theUnited States flag.

The revenue cutter Kite had been sent to the relief of the Savannah bythe Admiral of a fleet lying in the cove of Cork. The station at CapeClear had sighted her with smoke belching from her bent stack andconcluded she was on fire. The surprise of the Britishers can beimagined when the Savannah, without a sail set, out distanced themcompletely. It was not until after the exasperated cutter's crew hadfired shots at the American vessel that she stopped and gratifiedtheir curiosity.

Proud of his new ship and with memories of the War of 1812 still inhis mind, Captain Moses Rogers refused to follow the custom at Britishports of flying the Union Jack above the Stars ans Stripes while lyingoff the bar at Liverpool. The Captain of a British sloop took this asa personal insult and a boat was sent out to order the American colorsdown. Threatened with force, sailing master Steven Rogers, who was ondeck at the time, turned to his engineer and said, "Get the hot waterengine ready." Although there was no such engine, the idea of a bathof scalding water was enough to cool off the Britisher, who droppedthe whole matter.

The Savannah did not have many plesant experiences in England, although her trip up the Mersey was watched by thousands. She wasgenerally viewed with suspicion. Newspapers of the day surmised that"this steam operation may, in some manner, be connected with theambitious views of the United States."

Ten days of her thirty three day run to St. Petersburg, Russia, wereunder steam with the engines running for spells of fifty two hours ontwo occasions. Eighteen hours was the Savannah's longest period understeam while on her Atlantic crossing. She did not use steam on herreturn voyage to Savannah, GA because of rough October and Novemberseas.

The Savannah

The Savannah, built at Corlear's Hook, New York, by Crocker & Fickett, was launched an 22 August 1818. It was built as a sailing packet toply between New York and Liverpool, but was purchased soon after thelaunching to be rebuilt as a side-wheel steamer for Trans-Atlanticservice between Savannah and Liverpool.

The complete rigging remained, and a steam engine was added withremovable shaft and paddle wheels. The latter were constructed likefans so that they could be removed and folded upon the deck when notin use. The wheelhouse was made of canvas stretched on an iron frame. The engine was built by James Pallavre of New York, and was an inclinedirect-acting single cylinder type engine, 40 inches in diameter, witha 5-foot stroke, and two circular boilers built by Daniel Dodge.

The Savannah's speed under steam alone was five knots, and it consumednine tons of coal a day.

A trial trip was made from New York to Savannah in seven days underCaptain Robert Innott's command, relying mostly on sails. After thistrip the owners thought there was no doubt that the vessel wouldaccomplish a fast transatlantic voyage, and on 26 May 1819, underCaptain Moses Roger's command, the vessel sailed from Savannah forLiverpool. Carring neither passengers nor cargo, the ship made nine toten knots and arrived at Liverpool in twenty-five days. The engine wasin use eighteen days during the voyage.

When this side-wheeler arrived on 20 June 1819, with sails furled, andStars and Stripes flying, all the piers were thronged with thousandsof people loudly cheering a vociferous welcome. While in Liverpool theship was carefully watched by rge English authorities, it beingsupposed that the Savannah was part of a scheme to carry off Napoleonfrom the Island of St. Helena.

The vessel then sailed for St. Petersburg in August, 1819, returningto Savannah early in November via Copenhagen and Arendal in Norway. The steamship encountered a very heavy storm on this return trip, butmade the voyage in fifty-three days.

On a later trip the Savannah to Washington, the Savannah lost itslifeboats and anchors off Cape Hatteras. Later, after it was sold fora sailing packet between New York and Savannah, the vessel grounded onone of these voyages, became a complete loss, and was broken up.

It is the sailing of the Savannah in 1819 that is commemoratedthroughout the United States on 22 May as National Maritime Day. TheSavannah was 130 feet long 26 feet breadth, 16 1/2 feet depth of hold;380 tons gross.

The Savannah

The first steamship to cross the Atlantic Ocean was the "Savannah,"built by Francis Fickett, in 1818, at New York City. She wasoriginally constructed as a sailing packet for New York and Havreline, but Capt. Moses Rogers, who had been employed by both Fulton andStevens in commanding several of their early steamboats, inducedScarborough & Isaacs, a welthy shipping firm in Savannah, GA., topurchase the vessel and fit her with an engine and boiler. The vesselwas about 100 feet long, 28 feet beam and 14 feet deep; was fittedwith an inclined engine, built by Steven Vail, of Speedwell, NJ, andthe boiler by Daniel Dodge, of Elizabeth Town, NJ. The water wheelswere of wrought iron, with eight radial arms, and so contructed as tobe folded up like a fan. They were 16 feet diameter with 8 buckets ineach wheel. The wheel houses were an iron frame covered with canvas. The vessel carried the same complement of spars and sails as a sailingship of that period. The whole cost of the vessel was about $50,000.

On 28 March 1819, the vessel made a trip to Savannah from New York, arriving at the former port 6 April, in 8 days 15 hours. The enginewas operated only 41 1/2 hours during the trip. Shortly after she madea trip to Charleston, SC, and returned to Savannah on 1 May.

On 24 May 1819, the vessel left the port after which she was named, under the command of Capt. Moses Rogers, for Liverpool, England, whichport she reached on 20 June, making the voyage in 27 days, 80 hours ofwhich the vessel was operated under steam. The London Times of 30 June1819, said, "The Savannah, a steam vessel, recently arrived atLiverpool from America, the first vessel of the kind which evercrossed the Atlantic, was chased the whole day off the coast ofIreland by the 'Kite,' revenue cruiser on the Cork station, whichmistook her for a ship on fire." Left Liverpool 23 July, afterremaining there a little over a month, for St. Petersburg, Russia, stopping at Stockholm and Cronstadt, where she arrived 13 September, having used her steam power 239 hours, or nearly 10 days out of 33days while under way. On 29 September she started on her return to theUnited States, stopping on the way at a few of the Baltic ports, andarrived at Savannah 30 November, after a very stormy passage. A fewdays after, the vessel left for New York, stopping at Wahington, DC,on 16 December. Shortly after her machinery was removed and sold toJames P Allaire, and the hull converted to a sailing vessel and runbetween New York an Savannah, GA, under command of Captain Holdridgeuntil driven ashore in an east-northeast gale on 5 November 1821, onGreat South Beach, opposite Moriches, on the south shore of LongIsland, while on a voyage from Savannah, where the vessel became atotal loss. In all the authorities the loss of the vessel is given as1822, nothing more definite than the year. That seems to have been afailing of early writers, to omit the details in many cases. The steamcylinder of this engine was on exibition at the Crystal Palace Fair inNew York in 1856. The occasion of her failure as a steamship was thelarge amount of space occupied by the machinery and htat required forthe stowage of wood for fuel, thus leaving a small space for cargo.

There have been a few attempts made to dispute the history of the"Savannah" as the pioneer ocean steamer of the Atlantic, and call it afallacy. The latest of such endeavors was to bring forward a Britishsteamer named "City of Kingston," as arriving here about 1814. Whenthis was examined it was found there was such a steamer, but she didnot arrive here until 1838, about the time of the "Sirius".

There was a long period of time after the "Savannah" before anotherAmerican steamship crossed the Atlantic Ocean, and during that periodthere had been much knowledge gained of steam navigation that was ofservice in constructing ocean steamers.
