It is likely that prospectorssearched far into the canyon of the North Yuba during the summer andfall of 1848, after the discovery at Coloma exposed the populace tothe lure of gold. Among the first white men definitely known to be inthe area were Philo Haven and his nephew Carlos, Francis Anderson,Warren Goodall, and Thomas Angus. They located at what came to beknown as Little Rich Bar, about one half-mile below present dayDownieville, in early September of 1849. Anderson is reported to beamong the first to hit paydirt, raising color on September 14. MajorWilliam Downie, an immigrant from Scotland, headed for California uponlearning of the discovery of gold. After reaching San Francisco,Downie booked passage on the schooner Milwaukee, which set out forSacramento on July 5 of 1849. Downie writes of the trip, "We got up toSacramento in eleven days, pulling and warping the old box most of theway. But what of that! We were going to the Gold Diggings!" Downieleft Sacramento and headed for the Yuba River, where after two monthsof
prospecting with disappointing results, he decided to give up his panand rocker to become a storekeeper. This endeavor proved short-lived;however, for one day two miners came into the store and paid for theirpurchases in lumpy gold nuggets. From this Downie deduced that theywere
washing gold higher up the river and he wanted some of it for himself.

Downies party of ten black sailors, an Indian, an Irish boy namedMichael Deverney, and a Kanaka named Jim Crow arrived that November atThe Forks,öf the place where a smaller river joined the North Yuba.Following the smaller river a short ways north, they came upon severalmen working
a little bar just below the Blue Banks, a very rich section of riverbed and bank gravels. The party camped for a time on nearby JerseyFlat where they learned they could find gold in the most unusual ofplaces. Tradition has it that one morning, Jim Crow caught a troutweighing between twelve and fourteen pounds, and after cooking it thatnight for supper, they found gold in the bottom of the kettle.

The Major and his men later moved on to Zumwalt Flat where they put upa few log cabins for shelter against the rapidly approaching winter. The party's supplies were already running low, so late in December adetachment of eight men led by Jim Crow were sent below forprovisions.
When the weather allowed those left in camp to work, they werepleasantly surprised to find the area so rich that it was not uncommonfor them to make from one to two hundred dollars a day. But by lateFebruary, the snow put an end to all work on the diggings, forcing themen to remain in the cabins. By March the party sent for supplies hadnot yet returned and with the food nearly gone, the men went onrations. Fortunately the arrival of spring and the return of Jim Crowwith provisions found the
men still alive. A small number of miners followed Crow back to TheForks, and as the trails into this remote wilderness became morepassable, the news of the discovery spread as if by magic. It soonbecame necessary to lay out a town, which task was appointed to JamesVineyard as he was schooled in surveying. He also served as thetown's first Constable. In April of 1850, the first eating-house wasopened by Mrs. Judge Galloway in a large log cabin. The Pioneer MeatMarket,
established by Ned Barker, soon followed and from there the town tookoff. James Durgan built a sawmill on Durgan Flat. Miners poured intothe region each day for weeks on end, resulting in rich strikes on theneighboring bars and flats becoming an almost daily occurrence. TheForks soon became the center of a wide circle of camps stretching outin all directions. With the large number of miners entering the areaand so many claims being staked, many disputes arose between the claimholders, making it necessary to call a meeting to establish a set ofmining laws for the region. The miners had their meeting and adopted aset of rules, one of which limited the size of a claim to thirty feet. After the meeting, things went on smoothly again for some time untilthe lawyers came up. The miner's life was not a cheap or easy one inthe high Sierras. As supplies had to be brought in over the roughriverside trail, necessities were both scarce and expensive; a simplewool shirt
cost $50, sugar sold for $4 a pound, boots and shoes ran from $25 to$150 a pair. Most of the miner's day was spent knee deep in ice-coldwaters, panning, sluicing, or rocking, all hard work. After a supperof salt pork and beans, maybe a hard biscuit or two, the miner mightread a bit, talk
over the day's events with his partners, or maybe visit the saloonbefore retiring to his bed beneath the stars, a blanket spread out onthe ground. But the gold, the Gold! made it all worthwhile and therewas plenty of it along the Yuba River. One claim, sixty foot square onDurganFlat, yielded Frank Anderson and his three companions $12,000 ineleven days, $80, 000 in six months. The three partners at Tin CupDiggins, located across from the rich Zumwalt Flats, wouldn't quitwork for the day until a tin cup had been filled with gold, which theyhad no trouble doing. A twenty-five-pound nugget of solid gold wasfound in the river two miles upstream from camp. With finds like thisit's no wonder that by May of 1850 an estimated two thousand minerswere camped out at The Forks. When it came time to give the busymining camp a more permanent name, a Mr. Parks
offered the name Downieville which met with unanimous approval. WhyDownieville? An old story relates that the Major may have offered apan of gold to his fellow citizens if they'd rename the camp in hishonor, although no existing records have shown this to be true. On thenight of February 19, 1852, Downieville was completely destroyed byfire. The blaze swept through the cloth tent and clapboard shanty townwith a relentless fury, leaving rubble and smoldering ashes to greetthe dawn. Damages were estimated at $150,000 and although many losteverything they owned, the town was quickly rebuilt of moresubstantial materials and business and life returned to their normalfrenzy. The large population living along the Yuba River, the regionsvast wealth, and the fact that
the county seat at Marysville was too far away for effectivegovernment, prompted the citizens to petition the state legislature toseparate a portion of Yuba County and create a new county to be calledSierra. On April 16 of 1852, it was made so and Downieville became thecounty seat, which it remains today. One of the largest gold nuggetsöever found in the world was reportedly unearthed near Downieville in1853 by a man known as Finney, nicknamed "Old Virginny" as he hailedfrom Virginia. The mass of gold weighed 5,009 ounces, contained only asmall amount of quartz, and was valued at $84,302. Its shape resembleda pair of dumbbells, the link between the two being broken when Finneypried it out of the ground. Taken to San Francisco, the nugget was puton display on the counter of a prominent mercantile firm where it wasviewed by thousands before finally being shipped back East. Finneylater went on to play an important role in the Comstock Lode saga, giving his name to a town called Virginia City.

The town suffered a second disastrous fire on the first day of Januaryin 1858. Once again the flames were beyond control and everything intheir path was destroyed, including the bridge
to Jersey Flat. As before, the town was rebuilt, although perhaps notas quickly. By this time the gold had become more difficult to find asthe river and its tributaries were finally becoming worked out. Thecontinuing decline of the mining region eventually led to many of thetowns citizens leaving the area and the days of old, the days of gold, became little more than memories to those who stayed in Downieville.

Durgan Flat now belongs to the US Forest Service. Their RangerStation is built there. Durgan Bridge is a land mark across the YubaRiver The Spanish Dry Diggins has nothing left but a sign post and agrave yard.

There is a deed registered in Virginia City for a mine belonging toGeorge Washington Durgin. There is a deed for a mine belonging toDaniel Webster.. There is another record of George Durgin buying fromComstock himself 100 feet of the Comstock load for 50 dollars a foot.George removed to Fort Vancouver in 1855. He was my great uncle..This place is a must see place for anybody named Durgin/ Durgan. Onehour drive from Sacramen to North and East of Donner Pass. Ted

Oregon Trail 1849 MINERS DIG OUT GOLD NUGGETS Supplies Fetch HighPrices
On the Middle Yuba River, one miner took out 30 pounds of gold in lessthan a month from a claim only four feet square. Another miner dug up$26,000 worth of ore from his claim on the Stanislaus before it randry. At the camp of Volcano, miners found as much as $500 in a singlepanful
of gravel. At Durgan's Flat, near Downieville, four men dug out $12,900 in 11 days from their claim, 60 feet square; in six months itproduced $80,000. Tin Cup Diggings, near Downieville, was so namedbecause three men who mined there made it a rule always to fill a tincup with gold each day before
quitting. Just up the river from Downieville a nugget weighing 25pounds was found. Gould Buffum's party of 10 made $150 on the firstday, $1,000 in the first week at Weber's Creek. Moving on to theMiddle Fork of the American River they made $416 (26 ounces) the firstday by the pan, and about $400 the second day by the rocker. Thehard-won gold dust did not go far with the cost of supplies being sohigh. Miners usually took supplies with them, but seldom enough tosee them through the season. The transport of three barrels of flour, one barrel of pork and 200 pounds of small stores for
about 50 miles cost Gould Buffum's party $300. At the mines flourcost $1.50 pound, pork cost $1 pound and coffee was $1 a pound. Laterin the season coffee prices would rise to $3 to $4 a pound.
