The following obituary appreared in the Ozark Vistor, Vol. 85, No. 4,published by College of the Ozarks, Point Lookout, MO 65726.
Elizabeth Hoyt Clark
Mrs. Elizabeth Hoyt Clark, 87, of Point Lookout, lovingChristian, mother and wife, went to heaven on Friday, April 1, 1994.
Mrs. Clark was born September 18, 1906, to William Russell Hoytand Daisy Ellen (Sherman) Hoyt of Atlanta. She atended North AvenuePresbyterian School and Washington Seminary in Atlanta; Ward BelmontFinishing School, Nashville, and Agnes Scott College in Atlanta whereshe majored in speech and drama.
Following college, she became active in the work of FirstPresbyterian Church in Atlanta, wspecially in its home missions workin the industrial section of Atlanta. A co-worker in these activitieswas Atlantan M. Graham Clark to whom she was married May 2, 1933.
Mrs. Clark came to Point Lookout in 1946 when her husband becameVice-President of the School of the Ozarks, now College of the Ozarks.She continured to be active in her church work as superintendent ofthe S of O Sunday School for almost thirty years. She organized aWomen's Prayer Circle which has been meeting each Wednesday for morethan forty years.
She was a member of The Church of the College of the Ozarks, wasthe oldest member in years of service and served as an elder of thechurch. She was also a member of the Women of the Church.
During their years at the College she was the official campushostess and made frequent trips with her husband in fund-raisingefforts. In 1981, the Board of Trustees of the School of the Ozarksawarded her the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters. She was alsohonored when, in 1992, the Board established the Elizabeth Hoyt ClarkChair of Humanities.
She was active in philanthropic and patriotic organizations andwas a charter member of the Taneycomo Chapter of the Daughters of theAmerican Revolution. She was also a member of the Colonial Dames ofAmerica, Chapter JR of the PEO Sisterhood, and the Taneyhills LibraryClub.
Survivors include her husband, Graham, and four daughters:Elizabeth Embser and her husband Joe, Branson; Alice Davis and herhusband Harold, Atlanta; Margaret Miller and her husband William,Atlanta; and Julia Hampton, Festus, Missouri; eleven grandchildren:Richard, Darwin, and Elvira Embser. Leonora Lang, William, Gale, andEva Davis, William Miller III, Amy Hanks, Denise, and Krisit Hampton;three great-grandchildre: Josh Stever, Duncan and Madeleine Lang; andseveral nieces and nephews.
