Dr. Phineas Bartlett, a son of Rev. Moses Bartlett, was born in 1745,at Chatham, now Portland, CT on the place now (1884) occupied byWilliam H. Bartlett, ESQ He settled at Ashfield in 1766, and at theage of 21 began the practice of his profession, which after a fewyears became extensive and lucrative; and he earned and enjoyed theesteem of the community which he served. He was quite active andprominent in the public affairs of the township; was for many yearsits clerk and treasurer, and was permitted to witness a rapid andlarge increase in its population, which increase was from about 300 atthe time of his arrival, to nearly 1,800 at the date of his death, Oct20, 1799, at the age of 54 years. The manner of his death was byfalling from his horse in a fit, while on a visit to patients in adistant part of the town, after which he lived but an hour.
He married, Sep 14, 1708, Mehitable, daughter of Samuel Annable, Jr.She died Oct 31, 1780, aged 30. He married (second) March 20, 1781,Sarah Ballard. She died Jan 9, 1832, aged 81
