Jul 9 2002 - When Wesley Bigelow was killed in a car accident in thesummer of 1942, our biological mother, Bertha Rogers, who wasestranged from Wesley at the time, agreed to let her half-sister,Maybelle Lillian Rogers and her husband Jesse Edward Briggs adopt herthree children. At no time was my adoptive father ever married to mybiological mother, Bertha! His only wife throughout life wasMaybelle. (Incidentally, Maybelle's birth name was Mabel, but shealways signed her name "Maybelle" from her high school years on.)
Prior to Wesley's death, Bertha Rogers and a man named Roby Snyder hadbeen planning to marry, and it seems that three children interferedwith those plans. We had been staying with the Bigelows and withGrandpa James Rogers while Bertha stayed at the Snyder's house inPontiac, so Bertha now needed to make some permanent plans for someoneto take us. So, according to Marie, Bertha's sister, the threechildren of Wesley/Bertha would have been put in an orphanage if arelative did not step forward to adopt us.
I'm sorry that I can't locate the exact death and adoption dates atthis time, but we were adopted within two weeks of our father's death.I have the paperwork and dates, but not right at my fingertips.However, I did want you to know that what Tracy told you is correct.She asked me to write to you, since I am the one on this side of thefamily who has kept the records.
Jill, if you have other questions, please contact me. We have anextremely confusing family tree that only gets worse and worse on theRogers side. For example, Maybelle's mother Elsie was James Rogers'first wife. After bearing three children by James (Alice, Maybelleand Harvey), she eloped with James' brother. Then James married Alma,and they became the parents of Bertha and several other children.
There are other confusing aspects in this family tree, so it is nowonder that someone in the Bigelow family provided wrong information!Until just a few years ago one of my Bigelow cousins confessed thatwas unaware that Glenn, Mary Ann and I are her blood relatives. Shealways thought that we were just friends of her family.Unfortunately, the younger set of Bigelows still seem to be aware thatwe are relatives, and they forget to inform us when deaths in thefamily occur. Only recently did we find out, AFTER the funeral, thata dear uncle died. So, hopefully, your corrections will provide aclimate of understanding, and our biological family will know moreabout Wesley's children and grandchildren.
Thanks for being willing to correct the records, Jill. It was verydisconcerting to all of us on this branch of the family tree to readincorrect information that says that Jesse, who was totally devoted toMaybelle--and ONLY to her--was ever married to anyone else. Berthawas married to five different men during her lifetime, but never toJesse!
