INDEX

[1177] Original data from Ellingsworth with birth as about 1690. It is notclear at present if this Moytoy is the son or grandson of AmatoyaMoytoy. See note at Amatoya Moytoy.

From Hicks' website -

Moytoy Pigeon, of Tellico; Supreme Chief of the Cherokee 1730-1760.

The Eastern Bands of Cherokee, by John R. Finger, Univ. of TN Press,Knoxville:
[Early Cherokee society was atomized into clans with individualchiefs]... Sir Alexander Cuming boldly addressed this problem in 1730by traveling to Cherokee country and proclaiming a single chief,Moytoy, as the first chief and King of his people.

from Don Chestnut's webpage;www.users.mis.net/~chestnut/pages/cherokee.htm
Moytoy: a Cherokee chief recognized by the English as "emperor" in1730. Both the correct form and the meaning of the name areuncertain; the name occurs again as Moytoy in a document of1793; a boyupon the East Cherokee reservation a few years ago bore the name ofMa'tayi, for which no meaning can be found or given.

Old Frontiers, by John P. Brown, also details a Moytoy of Settico whowas rampaging through VA after the death of "Emperor" Moytoy ofTellico, and in the Colonial Records of SC, 1754-1765, a letter dated1/31/1757 references a "Moyatoya, son to the Mankiller of Highwasseydeceased". [Moytoy's son, Raven of Hiwassee had a son called Moytoywho could be this Moytoy of Settico]

[2888] Data from Witt as Nancy Hite. Date used here from Hicks.

As compiled here, Nancy would be of the Paint clan but so would herhusband, the Badger. This would be forbidden under the Cherokeecustoms of the day. The clan association on Nancy's side is assumedthrough her "sister" [niece?] Wurteh (Paint clan) but Nancy may havebeen a half-sister; this would allow her to have a different clanassociation.

INDEX

[2] Data from Hoyt's Issue Fall 1990 with supporting data from Halley whonotes that Na-ni or Nancy was also called, in later years, Granny Wardand, earlier, White Rose. Halley also states that she was awarded thetitle Ghigua in 1776.

At the battle of Taliwa, Northern Georgia, against the Creeks in 1755she took up her husband Kingfisher's rifle and fought in his placeafter he was killed. This action subsequently won her the election ofGhigua or Beloved Woman in her nation.

Nancy Ward's given name was no doubt the Anglicized form of herCherokee name Nanye'hi. This is an old personal name among theCherokee signifying "One who goes about" from Nunne'hi, the legendaryname of the spirit people in Cherokee myth.

Birth data used here from Hicks who gives her death place as Polk Co.,TN.

Data on Benge's site has a file sent by noted Cherokee Author anddesendant of Nancy Ward, David Hampton, (President of the Nancy WardSociety), gives her death as 1822 in present day Polk Co., TN and herburial as in Polk Co., TN.

Witt gives her as Nancy Ward, Cherokee name Tsistuna-Gis-Ke, and birthas 1728.

Hicks supplied the following -

Nanye'hi -Cherokee form of Nancy
Tsistuna-gis-ke -birth name, "Wild Rose"
Ghigau -title of "Beloved Woman"
Chicouelha [?] Moravian Diary entry
War Woman of Chota
Granny Ward
