[1175] Link with Clifford Ellingsworth (Spokane, MO) who gives birth asbetween 1700 and 1705..

From Cuma Schofield's book, "My Mother's Brown Family" -Attakullakulla was orignially a Miskwakihha Indian, one of thedivisions of the Algonquin Nipising Indians. He had been captured asan infant and then adopted by the Cherokee tribe. This account wasgiven by Turtle at Home, his son in 1809 to Maj. John Norton. Thismay account for his different stature. Attakullakulla means WoodLeaning or Stick Slightly Bent.

Hicks supplied birth date used here, gives the spelling asAtttacullaculla and gives death place as Nachestown, NC (now TN). Heattended the 1730 Delegation to King George, II. He was a signer inMar 1775 to Henderson's Treaty, Sycamore Shoals.

Don Chestnut's web page - "Ata'-gul kalu', a noted Cherokee chief, recognized by the British government as the hea chief or "emperor" ofthe Nation, about 1760 and later, and commonly known to the whites asthe Little Carpenter (Little Cornplanter, by mistake, in Haywood). The name is frequently spelled Atta-kulla-kulla, Ata-kullakulla orAta-culculla. It may be rendered "Leaning Wood", from ata', "Wood"and gul kalu, a verb implying that something long is leaning, withoutsufficient support, against some other object; it has no first personform. Bartram describes him as "A man of remarkably small stature, slender and of a delicate frame, the only instance I saw in theNation; but he is a man of superior abilities."

DANIEL BOONE, THE PATH FINDER. From Chief Justice Walter Clark's "TheColony
of Transylvania," (N. C. Booklet, Vol. iii, No.9) we learn that Boonewas a wagoner under Hugh Waddell in Braddock's campaign of 1755, whenBoone was 21 years old; and that "in the following years he made theacquaintance of Col. Richard Henderson, who, struck with Boone'sintelligence, and the opportunity for fortune offered by the new landssouth of the Ohio, since known as Kentucky, organized a company, andemployed Boone in 1763 to spy
out the country[15] . . . Years passed before it took final shape.Boone is known to have made one of his visits to Kentucky in 1769, andwas probably there earlier.[16] In 1773 he again attempted to enterKentucky, carrying his family, but was driven back with the loss ofsix men killed by the Indians, among them his eldest son at Wallen'sgap." But in 1768 Henderson had been appointed a judge; which positionhe held till 1773 and which
probably delayed his land scheme; but in 1774 Nathaniel Hart, one ofHenderson's partners, journeyed to the Otari towns to opennegotiations with the Cherokees for the grant of suitable territoryfor a colony of whites. On March 17, 1775, the Overhill Cherokeesassembled at the Sycamore Shoals of the Watauga, pursuant to an orderof their chief, Oconostata, where a treaty was made and signed by himand two other chiefs, Savanookoo and Little
Carpenter (Atta. Culla Culla), by which, in consideration of Lb.12,000in goods, the Cherokees granted the lands between the Kentucky andCumberland rivers, embracing one-half of what is now Kentucky and apart of Tennessee. But Dragging Canoe, a chief, had opposed a treatyfor four days, and never consented to it. The share of one brave wasonly one shirt. But, the Cherokees had no title to convey, as thisland was a battle-ground where the
hostile tribes met and fought out their differences. Besides, thisconveyance of the land by Indians was unlawful under both the Britishand colonial laws. Henderson called this grant Transylvania.
